Junkers W 33 "Bremen" - first east-west crossing of the Atlantic (Aug 1928)

On 13th April 1928, this Junkers W 33 aircraft made the first east-to-west crossing of the Atlantic. The aircraft bearing serial number D-1167 and named "Bremen" had left Ireland on 12th April, headed for New York. Aboard were two Germans - Baron Gunther von Hunefeld, who owned the aircraft, and Captain Hermann Kohl from the Deutsche Luft Hansa, and an Irishman - Commandant James Fitzmaurice. After a 36 hour flight in which they went significantly off-course, the trio landed the Junkers at Greenly Island in Canada, missing New York by 1200 miles. However, they had made it successfully across the Atlantic, for which they were welcomed by a ticker-tape parade in New York, and awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross by the US President Calvin Coolidge.

The aircraft is now at the Ford Foundation Museum in Michigan, USA.
